PPD - Business cards are here!

They are hear, they didn't take long to arrive and moo was really good with me as a customer. I already want to send off for some more however I've noticed a few things I'd like to change already.

Firstly the kerning on the 'C' and the 'P' is slightly narrow then the rest of the logo and secondly and more importantly, the point size of the contact information on the reverse side has been shrunk down from 11pt to 7pt. I'm not sure if this was through a fault of my own or if it happened during the uploading process to the moo website. Regardless I will be sending off for some more probably after the end of this module as funds are a bit short this time of year.

Overall though, the quality, price and service are more than satisfactory. I will be using moo again I think.

WEB TECH SESSION 2

We looked over a brief that the college had received and began to pull it apart and begin thinking about what the client is actually asking for.

How to differentiate between tasks for a web designer and a web developer.

We are designers, anything to do with two way communication, databases and so on is a job best done by a web developer. Someone who knows what they are talking about and who is capable of coding such functions.

Functionality is one of the key factors to a good website but the majority is only achievable by a specialist professional.

So when looking at these kinds of briefs you need to learn when to start working with someone else on the website.

Ask the clients what they mean about certain parts that may seem odd or that you don't understand - get them to clarify because it maybe be that they don't actually know what they are talking about, they may be asking for too much or the wrong thing, or they could be asking for something very specific.

Our thoughts about the brief.

- the clients knows nothing - but they think they know more than they do
- exhaustive - not to the point
- they want the Moon on a stick - everything for nothing

Briefs like this need to be avoided, they aren't worth your time and its almost insulting to be asked to do it.

More about slicing on Photoshop.

You can export your slices as html and then open them up in Dreamweaver - this will create them as 'tables' instead of using div ids - this can cause a few problems though and its best not to do it this way

Comments - allows you to remove code from the design without having to copy it then delete and past back in afterwards. This function lets you select and disable specific lines of code without removing it at all.

Highlight the lines of code you want to remove
apply comment function on the left hand tool bar in Dreamweaver

Collapse tags (again in the left hand tool bar) - like locking layers

CSS - defines the look of the website - colour, typefaces, rollover buttons, size of type etc

HTML - is where content goes - css sheet, text, images etc

Things I want to learn about web design:-

- how to code scrolling in boxes
- how to code search engines
- how to code animations and animated links
- how to code light box

get a book on basic html coding.

PPD - Creative CV

What is a Creative CV?

A creative CV isn't like other standard CV's they are designed purposefully to grab the attention of other creatives and professionals in order to get work, experience and jobs. The CV needs to be clear and to the point whilst remaining interesting and creative. I've found some examples of creative CV's below.

This is one of the sites I found these samples on.

Who are you writing it for?
- studios you want to work for
- freelancers
- industry professionals
- yourself

Who needs to read it?
- creative directors
- designers
- employment/ internship operators within the agency

Who will actually read it?
- receptionist
- PA
- publicist or agent

What do they need to know?
- my name
- contact details
- social networking links
- my design skills

What do they want to know?

- what my work is like
- what I've already done
- why I want to work with them
- what I'm interested in
- what can I bring to them and contribute to

Business Card 1st Order.

Just placed my first order for 50 business cards from http://uk.moo.com/. The design is only a basic one but it does the job for the time being. I'm expecting them to arrive of the 14th of May which will hopefully give me time to send a few out or use some when going for interviews.
