 Module Title
DRAWING AS PRACTICE

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
CHARLIE CROSBY

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I found that this module was more about applying the skills I already had and challenging them to go further in order to produce better work and be more creative. One particular aspect of the module that I thought was good for developing as a designer was the pace of the briefs in the first few weeks. Being so close together made it a challenge to get the most out of each brief and it really forced me to think quickly and get as many ideas down as possible. So idea generation has improved.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have developed a good technique for embossing by hand, which has proved to be quite effective. It has helped open my eyes that taking risks is better than playing it safe, as I had never done embossing before by hand and it could have gone completely wrong.
I’ve worked a lot with vectored images and illustrations, which I feel is the direction my design approach, will be going in, as I feel confident that I can produce strong work with this method.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Illustrator and vectoring skills have been put to good use and I’m hoping to continue using these methods in future works. Working on these briefs with these methods has also influenced my interest in other peoples design and I find myself drawn to a broader range of typographic designs as well as illustrative.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I find that if my ideas don’t have a concept then they lack structure, I’ve always been a conceptual thinker and in some cases my work lacked a concept or a strong one and the quality of the work suffered greatly.
I rely on digital print far too much. Although I have experimented with some embossing and hand rendered pieces I tend to stay clear of other print processes which I think can restrict my work.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  1. Research in more depth.
  2. Work more extensively.
  3. Document more thoroughly.
  4. Try more than one idea to see which works best instead of settling for the ideas, which I like the most.
  5. Think more about the time limit and the availability of the facilities so as to try different methods of production.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(Please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
