Tetley's Design Job.

A friend of mine from Leeds Metropolitan University put me in touch with her friend Jon Clough, a final year film and moving image production student, as he needed someone to design a variety on promotional material for the launch of his film about the closing down of the Tetley's brewery in Leeds.

I will be working on this job with my friend Dave Rutter who is a first year student on the Art and Design Interdisciplinary course at Leeds College of Art.

I'm currently contacting him via email and discussing the requirements and specifications of the deliverables he would like me to work towards. Below are the emails he has sent to me, highlighted in blue, and my responses, which remain black.

Hi

I don't no how much Emily explained when she told you i was looking for someone but i thought i may aswell tell you about the project.

Basically, I'm a film and moving image production final year student at Leeds Met. (Also station manager of met tv, thats how i no Emily)
For my final major project I'm producing a documentary film about the closure of the Tetley's brewery in Leeds. Iv copied in the "log line" below that gives you a bit a sence of what the project is about.
"Quality Pays is a documentary film about the closure of the world famous Tetley’s Brewery in Leeds. Founded in 1822, Tetley’s is of massive social and cultural importance to the city of Leeds.  This film explores the relationship between new owners Carlsberg UK and other skeptics throughout Yorkshire. Offering an insight into the decisions made by Carlsberg leading up to the announcement of the closure, alongside how this has been viewed by members of the local community both past workers, and passionate real ale drinkers."

I am looking to distribute this film through the country, to various different film festivals throughout the UK, and therefore need some promotional material. What i would like you to produce is:

  • DVD cover
  • DVD labels (to go on the front of the disc's)
  • 2 Posters
  • Hard Copy press kit (At the moment this is only a possibilty depending on budget etc. Will most probaly be a little booklet with Crew Bio's , production stills etc)
  • Electronic press kit (Basically somthing that will really sell the film when sent out digitally)

In terms of style we looking for the design work to be simple and professional.

We have a small amount of production photograph's from when we have been shooting but ideally if you are handy with a camera that would be great. If not i will be able to find someone to work with you.

We have money in the budget  to get all these professionally printed, however no money for the design work. We will be able to cover any costs that are uncured.  We have had a double page spread in the yorkshire evening post already for the documentary, and they are very interested in doing a follow up artical. Will be sending them copies of all design work and insisting that it be put into the artical, so will be good for your portfolios to.

As i mentioned the film will be distrubuted to festivals through the UK and hopefully further afield and the design work is often key to getting the sort of exposure we would like. Unfortualty as i mentioned we will not be able to pay you for your work. However i am currently in the process of researching/funding other project's and i am looking to form connections with good designers in the local area to produce work in the future.

At the moment we are working to a deadline that coincides with the closure of the brewery itself and therefore looking to have everything completed by the 24th of May.

If you are still interested in the project i would like to meet up with you both as soon as possible to discuss ideas etc. If you could send me any examples of work you have produced before so i can get a sense of your style etc, that would be great!

Thanks Alot!
Any questions just give me a bell or message back
Jonathan

Hi

I've gone over the the email below with Dave and we're both on board for doing this. I think we should definitely meet at some point to discuss the details. I'll make an invoice for you this week to give you an idea of how much the printing will cost for the mock ups and final deliverables. To get started though i have a few questions about the work to get us started

For the posters we need to know what scale you would like them to be, in terms of A size B size or if you would like them to be to a 2:1 ratio?
Also is there a colour limit to save money on the printing? for example 2 colours and then the stock colour?

For the DVD cover and labels, we already have the sizes to work to but again I'd like to know if you have any colour specifications?

For the press kit we'll make some pdf files that can be mailed out to promote the film but i'm unfamiliar with the contents of a press kit so if you could give me an idea of what you want that would be great.

We will be doing our own research for this but if you have any information that you would like to be in the work, or any websites/articles/publications that you think will help, please send links.

Charlie.

Hi Charlie

Great to hear your onboard!
  • For now we will only need the design work for the posters. This is because they will be sent to film festivals along with film submissions and they arrange printing.
  • Re. DVD covers, we can have a chat about cost when we meet. For now (as with the posters) don't let it be a restriction and work to what ever you think looks best.
  • Re. Press kit, Il put together some information for you this afternoon
  • The yorkshire evening post have run alot of stories over the years about Tetley's so what is where we started
http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/latest-news/tetley_s_leeds_brewery_s_last_days_on_film_1_3017525 - Thats a link to the article written about us. Ill have a word with our reasearcher and see what we can dig up to help you out.

I may be able to get hold of a series of very nice old images of the tetley's brewery from back in the day... i will get back to on that one.

Would you be able to do the photography work as mentioned in the email below, or would you like me to find you a photographer?

When would you be avaible to meet? If you could bring some rough ideas/images/skecthes etc that would be great.

Cheers
Jon
