End of Module Self-Evaluation

1. what skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

To begin with i had never worked in a group before so it was a big change when we we given the How To... project but it helped me with the way i talk about my ideas and try to paint a mental image for someone else. Furthermore standing up in front of the entire year group for the first time and giving a presentation of the same project was a big step up in confidence and it really broke the ice for the weeks to follow.
I picked up some valuable skills in the illustrator brief mostly the different functions of the pent tool, and then went on the learn a few new hot keys and short cuts and a couple of other techniques that has really broadened the way i think in terms of how i can create images and typefaces.
I have always been able to research but during the research brief given to us over read week it was a nice change to have a list of things to look at to aid and focus our research and its made me think more about what i can find out about the subject I'm working with and how that new information can broaden my knowledge and inspire/affect my work.
throughout the rest of the briefs I've felt a definite improvement in my work and I've become increasingly more motivated and engaging more in the course.
I think I have used all the skills i have gain from this module at some point as well as skills from the other on going modules and it has had great positive effect on my work.

2. what approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have learnt to look deeper into the subject matter and really keep focused on what I'm look at instead of stringing pieces of information together loosely has I have done in the past. I found it really refreshing to learn that it doesn't necessarily have to be creative research and visually attractive but i can just be gathering facts and statistics and articles that provide information.
Collecting informative resources like this has definitely influence the way i think and has given my work a new dynamic and greater depth, which had increased throughout the module.

3. what strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

My work has been getting stronger since the start of the year with is a very positive thing and it's greatly built up my motivation. The strengths in my work I'd say would most probably be the ideas and the aesthetics or my final pieces. They are visually appealing in terms of composition and colour.

4. what weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

I have always found using type effectively difficult and often I'll have an idea in mind but it wont come out how I visualised it originally, however i do feel an improvement in the type I have applied to my work.
Often I think of one or two ideas and ill stick to them which can more often than not become restricting this was pointed out to me in my progress tutorial during reading week and i have since tried to push out more from my initial ideas and come up wit ha wider variety of resolutions.

5. identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  1. when recieiving a brief i will go directly in to doing necessary research and blog it.
  2. from there i will gain visuals to begin brainstorming and pooling ideas.
  3. i want to start working on both design sheets and in a sketch book so far it's been one or the other.
  4. explore a wider range of colours and use more colour in my work.
  5. go beyond my first response to a brief and gather more ideas and be more selective from those ideas instead of diving in and just going with the first idea that comes to me.
I expect to gain a broader creative flow and more ideas for putting these five points into practice and ultimately i hope to build a bigger body of work whilst maintaining and exceeding the standard of work.

6. How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an 'X')

5= excellent, 4= very good, 3= good, 2= average, 1= poor

Attendance: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 X
Punctuality: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 X 5 -
Motivation: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 X 5 -
Commitment: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 X 5 -
Quantity of Work Produced: 1 - 2 X 3 - 4 - 5 -
Quality of Work Produced: 1 - 2 - 3 X 4 - 5 -
Contribution o the Group: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 X 5 -

Illustrator - Final Piece

Illustrator - Evaluation

What is being communicated and how?
The letter A is being communicated through 26 differing visual representations and manipulations of the original letterform.

How well does this answer the brief?
I feel as though i have answered the brief really well in terms of the visual results I'm happy with the majority of the outcomes and the colour restrictions weren't a problem. I left the first letterform in its original state to see the comparison to its altered forms.

How well has the idea been visually explored?
The ideas have been extensively explored and made so thats each on differs from the rest really push my creativity out and stretching my skills on illustrator. Doing this has helped me learn a few new techniques and short cuts which will be useful in future briefs.

What are the strengths of the resolution?
I would say the strengths of the final outcome are the colours and the dynamic of aesthetics throughout. The colours aren't visually offensive so it makes it easier to look at and also i didn't restrict myself to having to use both colours in each letter which made it easier to give each outcome its own unique look.

How could it be improved?
Overall im satisfied with it but there were one or two letterforms that i felt were finished to a substandard level to the rest so i would go back a change them.

General comments...
I enjoyed this brief and i feel like I've learnt a lot from it which makes me feel positive for the next module.

Illustrator - rationale

Brief:
Produce a series of 26 visual variations based on one letterform. you are restricted to using black and one other colour and it is to be produced in CMYK. You can however experiment with opacity and half tones.

Who needs to know?
The audience will be the course tutors when this module comes to be assessed.

What do they need to know?
They need to know that i have explored and experimented with the skills i already had and the ones i learnt in the workshops to create a range of visually interesting letterforms that are still legible after a process of creation and or manipulation.

Why do they need to know?
They need to know in order to see what standard of work i can produce on illustrator given the time period and whether it is sufficient enough to have answered the brief.
What will they respond to?
They will respond to an A1 landscape sheet of 26 letterforms that are presented in a 13 x 2 layout.

What research is required?
The research will by into letterforms and fonts that already exist and that influence me visually. Also further research into tools and useful functions on illustrator may be beneficial on top of the work done in the workshops.

Message and Delivery - Final Pieces

Message and Delivery - Evaluation

What is being communicated and how?
The mail shot is communicating the extremity of the cost of cleaning up graffiti each year and stressing the fact its tax payers money while questioning the audience whether they are satisfied with their money being spent this way.

How well does this answer the brief?
I think that I've answered the brief well keeping the the colour restrictions. I feel a definite improvement and progression from the previous brief and i worked on mostly keeping the idea and concept simple and effective and focused on the audience.

How well has the idea been visually explored?
There is bare minimal imagery in the resolution but you could argue that the aim of the outcome was that it should look as close to a payslip as possible and it that sense its been explored thoroughly alongside the other ideas i came up with.

What are the strengths of the resolution?
The simplicity of the work really strengthens the aesthetic of the final outcome. the fact that it looks like a payslip with perforated edges making it different to a normal letter envelope format gives it a refreshing interactive aspect.

How could it be improved?
The question being posed inside works fine but from the feedback it was made apparent that the information in the altered payslip would work much more effectively if it was more obvious so the audience spends less time looking for the focal point and doesn't get bored with what they're holding.

General comments...
I feel I have improved greatly with this brief and i feel more focused, i enjoyed working with the ideas of how to present and interact with the audience through foldable deliverables and nets etc.

Message and Delivery - Rationale

Brief:
produce a mail shot that distributes, disseminates and reinforces your message to an appropriate list of recipients. Your resolution should fit within the envelope dimensions 160mm by 105mm and be accompanied by a visually appropriate mailing list.

Who needs to know?
The audience for my mail shot will be tax payers, MP's, government officials and the mayor of London where most ofd the graffiti is being cleaned up.

What do they need to know?
They need to know about what the government is doing with their tax payers money and where its going. In this case it's being spent on cleaning up graffiti vandalism annually.

Why do they need to know?
They need to know this in order to ask them if they think its really a worthwhile use of there money because essentially it doesn't benefit them or anyone else to have the graffiti removed.

What will they respond to?
They will respond to how inviting and eye catching the mail shot is and the interaction and innovation that it brings so it doesn't get dismissed as another piece of boring mail or junk mail.

What research is required?
Research will be based around how the reveal a message to the audience and how to present and interact with the audience. This includes things like how a letter unfolds how it looks and whether the mail hot includes things like games or posters or freebies etc.

Message and Interpretation - Final Pieces Reworked

Message and Interpretation - Final Pieces

Message and Interpretation - Evaluation

What is being communicated and how?
The work is communicating the issue of how much it costs to clean up graffiti vandalism.

How well does this answer the brief?
I think it gets the message across and it speaks clearly to the audience, however it does seem to lack in terms of impact. I found the image poster the most challenging to design as i was trying to use a lot of visuals to get as much information across. In the end i had to simplify it and just include the bare essentials and it works much better that way.
How well has the idea been visually explored?
I didn't explore the visuals very much before i began to create my designs but i was already very familiar with the different visual connotations that come with the subject matter. However i think it still would have been more beneficial to sketch out more visuals and develop them further than what i already know.

What are the strengths of the resolution?
The visuals and ideas of composition work well but i wasn't happy with my final outcome overall.

How could it be improved?
The colours work well but the don't give the impact i  was trying to achieve because at the same time i wanted them to relate to the colour of money and concrete to strengthen the messages context.
I would personally like the images to be less messy and more refined they appear almost tacky looking at them now after having the feedback

General comments...
I thought this was a good brief but i feel i haven't executed it as best i could. In future i think i'll try and keep things simpler and focus more on how the image is presented and presents itself. Also I've learnt that i don't have to fill a page or screen or poster.

Message and Interpretation - Rationale

Brief:
Produce designs foe a set of three high impact posters that deliver a personal identified message derived from your research.

Who needs to know?
The audience will be the rest of the year group but the work should be able to communicate to the general public in the sense that it is informative and understandable.

What do they need to know?
The audience will need to know what my fact is that i am trying to communicate and be able to see that it stands as a fact and not a statement or opinion. The fact i will be trying to communicate is 'Graffiti vandalism cost the government hundreds of millions in damage repairs and clean up jobs'
Why do they need to know?
They need to know this in order for the work to answer the brief and work as an informative and impactive message.

What will they respond to?
They will respond to three separate posters that work together as a series each communicating the same message when they stand alone. the first poster must be just type the second just image and the third both image and type.

What research is required?
Research into recognisable signs and symbols to simple communicate the message.
Research from the previous brief that was used to assemble the fact I am trying to communicate.

Typeface evaluation

Which personality traits did you choose to respond to and apply to the typeface?
STRIKING - features
CONTRAST - colours
DIRECT - no confusion when talking together. very to the point but not blunt
LAYERED - theres more that meets the eye. Quite reserved.
CLEAR - very understandable and confident when talking and socialising

What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface?
I used both upper and lower case in the typeface to show the use of contrast and further more the use of negative space. The negative space also gives the font the dramatic 'striking' feel needed to respond to the adjectives. I used a bold Arial Black font to give the impact and it created a frame around the lower case making the font seem layered.\

In what ways are the results effective?
The results are effective as they are answering and communicating all the adjectives I was responding to and the letterforms remained legible.

Typeface rationale

Brief:
The problem i intend to solve is to create a typeface that appropriately and effectively communicates the personality and characteristics of my partner. In this case its Sadie Thompson. The final piece must be presented on an A1 piece of tracing paper along with a 4.5cm by 9cm name badge.

Who needs to know?
The audience is my partner and some external members in the final critique.

What do they need to know?
The audience needs to gather from my work what Sadie is like as a person both visually and personally and they should also be able to see the reasoning for my response to the brief.

Why do they need to know?
the concept of my problem is to communicate the solution to the brief effectively and for the audience and my partner to agree whether it works or not.

What will they respond to?
Each aspect of the font should be relevant to the brief and be in context with the subject.

What research is required?
Primary: questionare, conversations, observation, initial judgement of personality and atmosphere.

Secondary: online research e.g. where shes from, her favourite things to do, to eat, to listen to, her inspirations etc.

Visual thinking final pieces

Visual thinking evaluation

What is being communicated and how?
The letter O through the means of photography, use of light sticks in a darkened environment and digital editing to combine the image with my letterform to create the final typeface.

How well does this answer the brief?
I think it answers the brief to an OK standard mainly because the idea is quite generic so its easy to understand but lacks innovation.

How well has the idea been visually explored?
I'd say it was explored to an average standard. I used photographs and experimented with long exposure as primary research and sourced images from the internet and used cutouts from magazines and flyers as secondary research.

What are the strengths of the resolution?
I think the initial idea really communicates the words definition. Also the combination of photography and digital imagery works nicely together.

How could it be improved?
I think I could have made it better if I generated more ideas and took them further to discover more alternative responses and generally further my innovation.

General comments...
I found this word quite challenging to communicate and its stretched my imagination and creativity. I'm taking it as a positive note as its pushing me further.

Visual Thinking Rationale

The brief...
Design 10 letterforms that communicate your interpretation of the word GLOW. They can be in sequence or series but have to be the same letter.

What do you need to communicate?
My own interpretation of the word GLOW. It has to be legible as a letterform and the idea has to be clear and relevant to the word.

Why do they need to know?
They need to be able to understand the idea behind the response and also be able to make out the letterform  so it must be legible.

What will they respond to?
They will respond to a set of 10 A6 visual printouts of my chosen letterform that i feel best communicates my response.

Where do they go?
It will be presented during the projects final critique to all others who have the same word as their starting point.

HOW TO...final piece

HOW TO...Self Evalutation

1. What role(s) did you take on in the group?
I wouldn't say there were any definitive roles within our group and everybody collaborated well. A lot of the time i took it upon myself to be proactive and get the creativity, and idea generation going. I did so mainly by raising the questions that we needed to respond to and i also organised a group brainstorm and blogging session outside of college timetable.

2. How well do you think you performed in the role(s)?
i feel i performed well but theres always room for improvement and being tired doesn't help but i didn't let that become an issue and i contributed equally to the project.

3. How well do you think you worked as a group?
I was really pleased with how well we all got along in the group we collaborated well and everybody contributed with ideas development research and attendance.

4. What were the positives of working in a group?
Whenever we had ideas we would all have differing opinions but it had a positive effect in the sense that we could learn how to view the same idea from a different perspective giving us a new light on the idea. I really liked being able to bounce ideas of others and develop them together.

5.What were the negatives of working in a group?
Having never worked in a group before, in the beginning it was a slight discomfort to accept others opinions and ideas and merge several peoples ideas together but i felt more comfortable throughout the week.

6. What will you do differently next time?
I feel that my presentation skills aren't very strong and also my organisation was time keeping makes it harder to get work done so i will focus more.

7. Where could you have improved your resolution?
I think at times we drifted from our original concept and that drove the finished piece away from solving the problem in some areas although it did stay relevant. Also the quality of the finished product could have been better in terms of the materials used to print because i felt the colours didn't quite work with the brown paper.

8. What were the strengths of your presentation?
We had an extensive and thorough documentation on our blogs and we handed out bits of our visual research so people could see more closely what we were trying to achieve, for example photographs of places where you could go for a nap.

My 10 Targets For 2010-11.

1. Expand my knowledge of design software and digital design. I've worked a lot with computers but i had to teach myself the fundamentals and research anything that i didn't know or understand, my aim is to become fluent with such programs as photoshop and illustrator etc.

2. I want to take more photographs! I recently bought a nice new SLR so I'm well on my way to reaching this target.

3. I have confidence when talking to a group of people but i think my presentation skills and delivery overall is fairly untidy and ill structured.

4. I often go for my first response to task/problem/brief but i feel my i need to challenge myself more by going for a less appealing idea than the initial ones i come up with.

5. My critical writing and analyse of my own and others work lacks substance and integrity, this is something i strongly feel needs to be improved as its a crucial part of development and communication.

6. Stop procrastinating and start being proactive.

7. To not be afraid to ask for help or try others ideas. Often i find that I am open to other thoughts and advice but i rarely take it on board.

8. I want to learn something new everyday and produce at least one piece or act of work a day.

9. Work on my pool game.

10. Become the best blogger in all the land.
