Visiting Professional Talk - Friday 4th Nov

Tom and Oli from Catalogue.

Used to be called Workshop but had to be changed for legal reasons - first word of advice was to make sure your company name isn't the same as anyone else's.

There aren't many good screen printers in the area and there is a lot of money to be made from it. Print jobs are a good source of income to get started on other jobs and to pay the bills.

You have to do the bad jobs to get towards the good jobs and the big jobs.

They spent a lot of time moving around to different work spaces which can be draining - its difficult to find your space - invest in a good space that you can work in - this creates a better environment for you to work in.

They work 9-6 Monday-Friday treat it like a working day so there is a structure and they have a life outside of work.

Working on contemporary designs and events can promote you and get you noticed, it may even be a really good source of income. They created and image elaboration library which was meant to last for a day but really boomed and know they sell these simple zines and books in a wide variety of places which brings in money (repeat sales).

get big in the design world as well as networking for clients and keeping clients. Contemporary, charity and one of design shows or events can get you noticed and establish or reinforce your image and credibility.

INVICTUS (investments company) They try to design not to show the investment company with in the design but create something than can be applied to a shop front or merchandise, so they don't brand to communicate what the company is but to give it a different symbolistic image.

THE CATCH UP project - a project they are currently working on to get more creatives to come to together and buy art and socialise in Leeds. Following from and old event that used to take place called DRAFT. This is like a pastiche in a way aiming to revive the event and make it thrive.

They went into business together instead of going into an internship because they feel that internships can exploit you because you work really hard for them, possibly for no money, and your most likely better than the people there that will have been there for several years and will stay on after you go.

Work hard - keep the finances balanced and make money.

Working in freelance is like looking after yourself - you can't get sacked if you're your own boss.

The chose to work together because of a collaborative project they did in their third year on the course and they won the pitch for the Prospectus whilst they were here, during which they realised they had a similar taste in design and were looking at the same design work.

CRUCIAL - watermark your work so that people can't just take your ideas and designs and make lots of money from them and leave you short.
